And even if my own personal little project doesn't pan out, I just enjoy going through books like this and learning stuff. Highly recommended. Of course, like any project involving education and self-education, the more research resources you have at your disposal the better. But this should definitely be a part of your catalogue of information in studying this topic. The first part, where I am at as I write this review, goes into great detail about many things in motion graphics that I have been wondering about.
It defines words and workflows nicely and lays a good ground for the upcoming projects. I was a newbie to Maya and some of the terminology contained in the software itself. This book helped me understand the terminology and walked me through the sticky details of Maya step by step. Loved it. Overall pretty good, but there are some errors, probably from previous versions.
Check the website for updates. Does not come with a disc, you must download the files. A great book if you want to learn Maya. The problem with these books is the software is constantly changing. I love the book! Very detailed explanations!
Also need to point out that the previous comments are correct, this book is not really up to date, some images in the first several chapters are still from the version. It just goes to show that you shouldn't publish a textbook on a program that hadn't been released yet. The programmers made changes to Maya and the book did not keep up with these changes. I will give it that it introduces each item and thoroughly explains each object and it's purposes which is helpful and it's clear the author understands the program quite well, but somehow the directions have been very lost in translation which makes it difficult for the beginning student of animation to follow.
Sometimes when you are going through the exercises you do not understand the purpose of the steps you are taking, which makes it difficult to really learn anything from them. You just end up making a copy of what is in the book and having no real idea of how it was accomplished.
The diagram pictures are like thumbnails and they are faded grey color which sometimes makes it difficult to see what exactly the image is referencing.
Makes it hard when the book says-- "click on the isopharm that is selected in figure 58! Proceed with caution, and utilize google search. Very helpful learning tool for Autodesk Maya. I bought this book to help me learn Autodesk Maya. The book itself as written is fairly easy to understand.
I am using it as a self teaching tool. I wish the author was available to ask some questions. The book that I purchased had several smeared pages from the printing.
The seller did give me a discount because of it. I think Dariush Derakhshani does a very good job of teaching. I am only into the 4th chapter, but so far so good.
